Shovels for snow camping

Shovels for snow camping

Why do we need shovels when snow camping?

Snow scoop and mountain shovel
Must-have snow country shovels. A 14″ graphite snow scoop and a collapsible aluminum touring shovel that doubles as a snow anchor. The blanket backdrop is an Early’s Witney Four Point trade blanket, candy-stripe pattern, important gear during the frontier era and for modern reenactors of blanket camping methods.

A snow scoop shovel can be a light weight package for high volume snow moving and snow construction. They are frequently carried on backcountry sleds and occasionally carried up mountains.

A shovel and a snow brush with scraper may be necessary when you return from the backcountry to the trail head. Access points are kept open for others, your vehicle may be buried like mine seen here. Only six inches of snow fell while in the back country, image the chore after a foot of snow.

Shovels are necessary equipment if you want to avoid the inconvenience and expense of using towing services to escape backcountry parking (never conveniently available). When you travel to snow country, snow finds you. Bring shovels.

I carry a full size snow scoop shovel when using a sled, a smaller mountaineering shovel when backpacking, and both when I plan to build a snow shelter.
